If you need a gentler workout, you can just proceed as far as the bridge looking upstream to Vernal Fall without exerting yourself quite so much. Parking: You can park just about anywhere in the eastern half of Yosemite Valley and catch a free shuttle bus to the trailhead near Happy Isles.
The nearest parking, however, is at the trailhead parking lot, which is just east of Curry Village Half Dome Village. If it's full, try Curry Village itself, where you can usually find a spot if you're willing to poke around in the back corners of the unpaved section of the lot.
Nearest Bathrooms: Park planners were apparently concerned about what subliminal messages our bladders would receive from the sight of all that flowing water, because the Mist Trail is Yosemite's toilet king. Besides the ones at Curry Village, you'll find them across the bridge at the first overlook, at the top of Vernal Fall, and at the top of Nevada Fall.
During the summer you can get drinking water at the Vernal Fall footbridge, roughly a mile up the trail. From Curry Village, a good place to park, hike southeastish on Southside Drive until you reach the trailhead or catch a ride on one of the free shuttle buses.
Alternately, you can check the trailhead parking lot, which is roughly half a mile past Curry Village and another half mile or so short of the trailhead itself. This lot tends to fill up early with people doing the Half Dome hike , though. Private vehicles aren't allowed on the road past the trailhead parking lot, so you can't drive all the way to the trailhead.
Hazards: It's illegal to remove any natural objects from a national park, but everyone who hikes the aptly named Mist Trail in the early season is a scofflaw: it's impossible to hike to the top of Vernal Fall in the spring without taking a little piece of the fall with you. You will get wet. Very wet.
Taking-a-shower wet. Jumping-in-the-ocean wet. Bring rain gear. The view looking back towards Yosemite Valley gets more dramatic as the path gradually ascends, turning due east as it rounds Sierra Point, below 8, foot Grizzly Peak. Top of the waterfall. Mist Trail The footpath crosses the Merced on a wooden bridge, location of a seasonal supply of drinking water, then continues upstream on the south side, becoming gradually steeper. Not far beyond the bridge is a junction; the John Muir Trail forks off to the right and switchbacks steeply up the side of the valley while the left branch remains at river level, approaching the falls after another half mile.
This path is known as the Mist Trail since the whole area just below the fall is continually dampened by spray, hence the rocks are covered with moss and other water-loving plants, and some parts of the trail become quite slippery. If the sun shines, transient mini rainbows form, and change shape as the spray is wafted in the breeze. By late summer though the amount of water is much reduced and the path less misty.
Rainbow, boulders and mist below Vernal Falls. The Falls Many steep steps take the trail up the rock face beside the waterfall, after which the path emerges onto a large, flat, open area at the top, with a railing-protected viewpoint right at the edge of the surging water. These alluring features are one of the reasons why Vernal Fall is the most dangerous waterfall in Yosemite, with around 13 people known to have died since after being swept over the edge by the strong currents, as a result of swimming, wading, boulderhopping or slipping from the riverbank.
Some of the railings were a little loose so be careful. The trail gets really busy and it gets narrow so coming down can be harrowing. Kind of a crappy trail - straight up pavement and then straight up stairs. No real trail and wrecks your knees. Overly crowded. Pros: -beautiful waterfall near the end -expansive table rock at the top where you can relax and have a snack -easily accessible Cons: -extremely crowded -one-way up and down has you walking over people both ways -stairs for a long way makes for a crappy trail.
Beautiful rainbow of color on Falls. Very crowded on way back down. Great hike but definitely do it in the early morning. Very steep hike, pack plenty of water. Had a few bugs flying around but nothing major. Water is flowing. Very busy on a Saturday morning. One of my favorite hikes! I always go with a large group of younger kids.

If you are entering on foot, horse, or bike the fee is per person. Vernal Falls is one of the most popular destinations in Yosemite and for good reason!
After a short but steep paved path you will come to a cross bridge with views up to Vernal Falls. This is followed by a short section of wide dirt trail and finally a steep rock stair set up to the falls themselves. These stairs can extremely slipper due to this mist from the falls, so please exercise caution. Here is the wooden foot bridge where you get a tiny glimpse of the falls up in the distance.
There are bathrooms once you cross, but they are closed during the winter months. As you come around this corner and start going up the granite steps you begin to see the falls. You may get wet! Especially in the summer months come prepared with a poncho or rain slick to keep you dry.
The steps get more wet as you go higher. There are plenty of places to pull over and take photos. At this point, there is just a short way to the top of the falls to look down. This part of the steps is very narrow, but there are rails to keep you safe. If you walk a little further from the vista point, you will see the calm emerald pool. It's a common place to take a break on a large rock. They warn people not to wade in the water or try to swim. People have been easily swept over the falls as the undercurrent is strong!
