I thought this was a beautiful collection of poems and it really pushed me into reading poetry again after a long hiatus. The poems are touching. I think my favourite introduction to a poem was when Judi Dench introduced Lord Byron's 'So we'll go no more a roving' and spoke about the connection with her late husband.

This anthology, for me, exemplifies the power of the written word. Once again, this was one of those books I just picked up and didn't really consider what it contained because I make decisions based on aesthetic and titles and it's not great but here we are and then was sort of surprised when it wasn't what my brain assumed it was. Cool read. Always nice to read why other people love certain pieces so much. While I didn't enjoy every poem in this anthology, there were enough I did, and some I loved. The introductions often drew the eye to particular aspects of the poems, even familiar ones, that then shed new light. Many of the poems had been selected for extremely personal reasons so they didn't make me cry, though I completely respected the reason for their selection.

And I have 'discovered' a new poet whose collection is now on my wish list Sep 13, Kathie rated it really liked it. Not a book to read from start to finish in a sitting or two, but one to savor periodically. The women who have selected poems are well-known for the most part. Their stories of what poems moved them, and why, are as poignant as the poems they select.

Some of the poems are classics: Tennyson, Dickinson, Coleridge. Others are contemporary. Within the collection there were more than a few that touched my heart and one or two that made me tear up as well. Beautiful and heartbreaking anthology collection of poems that really do what it says on the cover - they make you feel some kind of emotion if not lead you directly to cry. This anthology took us from the eighth century to the present day and they were all amazing.

Although by the very notion of an anthology there will be poems that you love more than others or engage on an emotional level more. But nevertheless all these poems within this collection earn their place within it.

Truly amazing. Well I read this book gradually as it seemed a shame to rush by reading such amazing poetry. It is a huge ranging anthology from the 8th century to the modern day. As interesting as the poems themselves are, of course, the stories of the amazing women who have chosen them and the reasons why they chose them.
